What I Loved

I kicked it old school with this one! How to Win Friends has been in print for over 80 years and that is insane! I feel like we need a modern book like this one called “How to Talk to People.” It is a lost art my friends, and that is so sad to me.

A few sections that I LOVED:

Techniques in Handling People: Don’t criticize, condemn or complain about someone, give honest and sincere appreciation.

Six ways to make people like you: Become genuinely interested in someone, smile at them! Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.Talk in terms of the other person’s interests. Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment: Begin with praise and honest appreciation.

  • Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly.
  • Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
  • Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
  • Let the other person save face.
  • Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement.
  • Be “hearty in your approbation (approval) and lavish in your praise.”
  • Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
  • Use encouragement.
  • Make the fault seem easy to correct.
  • Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Many of the things Carnegie mentions remind me of a quote by Thomas Carlyle: “A great man shows his greatness by the way he treats little men.”

Can you imagine a life and workplace where even just these few ideas were followed? We would do wonderful and amazing things.

Have you ever eaten in a restaurant with someone and seen them treat the staff horribly? That is a deal-breaker for me in terms of if you are allowed in my life. I know that sounds harsh but if you cannot treat people in the service industry amazingly, you are not a person who I want around me. I need people in my life who respect and value the people around them… right down to the wait staff.

All the thinking and actions suggested by How to Win Friends need to be big part of all our lives.

What I didn’t love

This was such a classic, good book, and I honestly cannot think of anything I didn’t like about it. Being that it’s 80+ years old, the writing style is old-fashioned, but I really enjoyed it.

Who I would recommend it to

Everyone! All leaders, all humans…. Is that broad enough?? Read it yourself, give it to your loved ones, coworkers, bus buddies… anyone!

Would I read it again
