What I Loved

Really good quotables and lines I went back to read.  I loved how he defined “at the top”.  It has nothing to do with what we would think as a society.  It is tied to who you are and how you think and not what you have.

These traits will get you more, yes, but that is not the focus of the book.

“Be thankful for the troubles of your job.

They provide about half your income because if it were not for the things that go wrong, the difficult people you have to deal with, and the problems and unpleasantness of your working day, someone could be found to handle your job for half of what you are being paid.

It takes intelligence, resourcefulness, patience, tact, and courage to meet the troubles of any day.

That is why you hold your present job and it may be the reason you aren’t holding down an even bigger one.

If all of us would start to look for more troubles and learn to handle them cheerfully and with good judgement as opportunities rather than irritations, we would find ourselves getting ahead at a surprising rate.

It is a fact that there are plenty of big jobs waiting for men and women who aren’t afraid of the troubles connected with them” – Mr. Updegraff Boston Globe as quoted by Zig Ziglar.

So much!! When is the last time you looked at your life and accepted the crap? I am not talking the really toxic stuff but the problems and frustrations.

And instead of burying yourself into them, saw the good, found a solution and kept going.  Can you imagine a life with this as your go to behaviour?

I loved this passage and will reread it often.  In every job/career/business I have ever done, it is amazing how true this is.  This book was a good thought shifter for me.

Not a lot that I was not aware of but something that is good to hear again and again.  And put in better words than I could ever have!!

“Ambition-Fueled by compassion, wisdom and integrity – is a powerful force for good that will turn the wheels of industry and open the door of opportunity for you and countless thousands of other people.

Fueled by greed and a lust for power, ambition is a destructive force that ultimately does irreparable damage to the individual in its grasp and to the people within its reach” – Zig Ziglar

THIS.  All of THIS.

This book also has a good goal setting exercise at the back that I can see being beneficial to many.  I found it too difficult to follow to be honest and would need to dumb it down/simplify it for myself and most of my clients.

When things look too complicated I find that I check out and forget that it is worth doing!! Just a brain hack of something I know about myself.

What I didn’t love

Oh I had high hopes for this book!! I had a few people in my life refer me to read Zigs books but man did I have a hard time getting into it.  The entire beginning felt like a sales pitch and I struggled with feeling “GET TO THE POINT”.

This could have to do with the fact that I am reading so much and my fluff allowance is shrinking.  I am getting more irritated at books that are trying to hook me in the first 6 chapters and then give nuggets after that.

Hmmm…. something I should think about.

While I did find a lot of value, I failed to be able to get fully invested. I felt that this book could have been half as long with less words and it would have been more effective.

The amount of times I set it down irritated was not good but at the same time that could be just my reading style! This thirst for more substance, less drivel.

Who I would recommend it to

People wanting to shift their perspective on why they are not getting ahead and to really see what it means to be at the top

Would I read it again

Maybe.  I will probably go back and read sections but not the whole book
