Life Hacks – 3 Reasons To Put Yourself First Because It Actually Matters

Guest Post by Kristen Vogt of Ascendant Fitness

How many of you find it hard to Put Yourself First?

I would hazard to guess children, husbands, work, household duties and friends all come before your own self care.

What is getting in the way? Guilt. Shame. Fear.

Put Yourself First #1. Increase Higher Levels Of Mental And Physical Energy

What if I was to suggest putting yourself first would allow you to become the best version of yourself. Taking care of your own needs would give you the mental and physical energy to give back.

There are likely days you are pulled in many different directions – meals for the family, chauffeuring your children to their various activities, career demands.

On these days it is probably hard to have the mental fortitude to give these situations your undivided attention. Can you even imagine what it would feel like to be focused, connected and present while you are running here and there?

This is why taking the time to focus on your own self care is so important. This doesn’t mean your self care focus is at the expense of attending to your family, but it is just as, if not, more important.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to give your people a relaxed, happy Mother/Wife/Friend than a frazzled, energy-less, bucket only half full or empty person to interact with?

At the end of the day it all comes down to you. The choices YOU make for your life. No one will give you the space or time you need. Only you can do that for yourself.

Jobs are demanding, Children take, take, take and I know for sure they will rarely say,

“Mom – it’s ok if you don’t make me supper tonight” or, “It’s ok if you don’t drive me to soccer.”

Even if you don’t have children, it’s easy to come up with a laundry list of reasons why you don’t have the time to care for yourself.

Where Does One Even Begin To Put Yourself First?

Put Yourself First #2. Exercise Is Linked To Positive Chemical Reactions In Our Bodies And Fewer Ailments As We Age

Movement really should be at the top of everyone’s list. It is scientifically proven to create a chemical reaction that affects all systems of the body in the most positive of ways.

Choose a form of exercise that fits your needs and schedule and DO IT! It doesn’t have to be an hour in length.

If ten minutes is all you have, then ten minutes of exercise is better than no exercise.

Find a way to move your body everyday, your mood will elevate and your happiness vibration will be through the roof.

Ten Minute Workouts

Here are a few examples of ten minute workouts you can truly fit in anywhere:

Example 1:

Complete 20 seconds of exercise 1, rest for 10 seconds then repeat for 3 more sets. Move on to exercise 2 and so on (4 sets total per exercise)

Exercise 1- Squats

Exercise 2- Pushups

Exercise 3- Plank

Exercise 4- Burpees

Example 2:

  1. Walk fast or run for 1 minute
  2. Recover for 1 minute
  3. Repeat for 10 minutes

Example 3:

Complete each exercise for 30 seconds, take a 30 second break, then repeat the circuit:

  1. Squats
  2. Lunges
  3. Push Ups
  4. Mountain climber
  5. Plank
  6. Side Plank

Have you seen the commercial with the tagline, “A body in motion stays in motion”. This couldn’t be truer.

As we age muscles atrophy, fascia builds up over our muscles, and our ability to move, if we haven’t been doing so already, becomes more difficult.

It shouldn’t be inevitable that aches and pains come with age. Our bodies are our temples and should be treated as such. It is never too late to begin.

Put Yourself First #3. Quietness Calms Our Nervous System

As important as movement is so is QUIET.

Being still calms or nervous system and helps us be better equipped to handle life when things get busy. For some people it’s easier to move their body than it is to be still.

It does take practice, but once you get it the rewards are endless. Turn the radio off, put your phone away, sit in silence and breathe.

Take the moments anywhere you can: in your car, outside your child’s school, in the garage before you go into the house. This really is all it has to be, a minute here and there.

It is OUR job to be happy, not for anyone else, but for ourselves.

Put Yourself First – Personal Challenge

Choose one thing you can do on a daily basis that will help you increase your happiness vibration. The one thing that will allow you to breathe, relax and enjoy YOUR time.

There will ALWAYS be something that gets in the way, self imposed excuses are usually the front runner.

What is the worst thing that could happen? Your family eats an hour later, laundry doesn’t get completely finished, your living room doesn’t get vacuumed – horrors!

Women can be SO hard on themselves, trying to keep up with a level of perfection that only ends up adding more pressure and stress.

When one CHOOSES movement, moments, inspiration and gratitude as focus points, your life will become high vibe.

A ripple effect occurs, thereby connecting us all. The energy is contagious and everyone benefits.

What are you going to do TODAY to raise your happiness vibration?
