Since the aneurysm, my brain has vibrated at 3 times the pace of an average brain. Yes I have had it tested. No I would not change it for anything!! The hard part? Rest for me means something different. It is NOT calm nature, it is NOT just sitting and resting. I need ACTION around me in a big way. So a few times a year? I run away. P.S. If you could erase one single year of your life what year and why? (and please no "but they all taught me things...." I know they have). But man I would throw out 1998 if I could. I often talk about the brain aneurysm but I don't talk about everything else!! 1998 was a tough year. 3 days before the aneurysm I went to the cops and reported my uncle for sexual abuse. I went home that Friday night to have to defend myself for the next 3 days to my entire extended family who believed I should have shut my mouth. Which if you have met me you would know that just made me want to yell louder!!! That year also included graduation (that I didn't get to enjoy), the loss of a dream of school, Husband going away for 10 months to follow his dreams and the aftermath of all things health. Dearest Dawn, Digging in the ditch is how I’d describe my life before meeting you. In the trenches fighting a constant battle across no man’s land against faceless enemies. My existence seemed futile and an endless source of pain and agony. Life after meeting you gave me hope, accountability with love, and a gentle nudge now and again when I’d slip or deny. "You are disgusting." Was that what was said? No. But it was what I heard. I was 9. It was a conversation that I walked in on between people that I loved. Looking back you would think it shouldn't have mattered, but that comment caused a bigger trauma in me than a lot of things I dealt with. The reason I think a lot of people don't believe that they have trauma, is that whatever is haunting them is not considered as "BAD" as someone elses. Lego! It’s an addiction that never ends, but it is healthier than most! My name is Dawn and I am an addict: A Lego addict. Let me explain. Many years ago, I was struggling with anxiety. I had been taking medication for it for way too long, so I decided there had to be a better way. Am I saying go off your meds? No. I am not a doctor. I am saying that it was an option for me that I wanted to try. I slowly weaned myself off the drugs and started the journey to “hacking” that area of my life. From time to time someone will ask me why I'm not angrier about my life and what I have been through. My answer? I only have so much time and energy in a day, and I feel like anger is a waste of my precious time!!! I have better things to do. Instead I schedule times to RAGE so that I have release, but day to day? I spend the time to shift my state. I ask myself if feeling angry is worth my time in the moment, and if I determine it's not? Grief sucks. I will never forget the call 16 years ago when I heard, “Your mom is dead.” The sound of my dads voice, the brokenness in his tone, and the shock as it hit. The years don’t get easier. Time. We only have so much of it; if your calendar is full don't add to it! Protect yourself by putting time limits on your meetings, visits, errands, etc. (tip: put on timers if you are known for going over!). Ensure that you plan for the things and people you love, including yourself. If you are overwhelmed and insanely busy, blocking out time for ALL things in your life is a good way to keep balanced. Block out time to read that romance novel, block out time to have lunch by yourself at a restaurant, or to work "on" your business.
