"You are disgusting." Was that what was said? No. But it was what I heard. I was 9. It was a conversation that I walked in on between people that I loved. Looking back you would think it shouldn't have mattered, but that comment caused a bigger trauma in me than a lot of things I dealt with. The reason I think a lot of people don't believe that they have trauma, is that whatever is haunting them is not considered as "BAD" as someone elses. Have you ever reacted to something and thought after "Damn. That was a big feel!" Where there is density there is emotion. Good or bad. These are typically trauma responses. A way to figure these out? Write them down when they happen. Are there patterns? As in are you having big feels when you are around the same people, or at the same time of day, or the same location? One small change. Just one small change. If you are anything like me you want change NOW (not impatient at all...). What I have figured out over the years? Change up HOW I go about making change. Instead of deciding to meal plan 7 days a week and then failing at it, I plan 4 or 5? Instead of going from a small amount of water to MASSIVE amounts of water overnight up your amount a cup a day! Lego! It’s an addiction that never ends, but it is healthier than most! My name is Dawn and I am an addict: A Lego addict. Let me explain. Many years ago, I was struggling with anxiety. I had been taking medication for it for way too long, so I decided there had to be a better way. Am I saying go off your meds? No. I am not a doctor. I am saying that it was an option for me that I wanted to try. I slowly weaned myself off the drugs and started the journey to “hacking” that area of my life. From time to time someone will ask me why I'm not angrier about my life and what I have been through. My answer? I only have so much time and energy in a day, and I feel like anger is a waste of my precious time!!! I have better things to do. Instead I schedule times to RAGE so that I have release, but day to day? I spend the time to shift my state. I ask myself if feeling angry is worth my time in the moment, and if I determine it's not? I superman pose, walk barefoot in the grass, practice deep breathing, throw a personal dance party... whatever it takes to shift my state! Grief sucks. I will never forget the call 16 years ago when I heard, “Your mom is dead.” The sound of my dads voice, the brokenness in his tone, and the shock as it hit. The years don’t get easier. Time. We only have so much of it; if your calendar is full don't add to it! Protect yourself by putting time limits on your meetings, visits, errands, etc. (tip: put on timers if you are known for going over!). Ensure that you plan for the things and people you love, including yourself. If you are overwhelmed and insanely busy, blocking out time for ALL things in your life is a good way to keep balanced. Block out time to read that romance novel, block out time to have lunch by yourself at a restaurant, or to work "on" your business. Anxiety is a tool, like all of our other emotions, to give us a signpost. Did you know that your body physically cannot tell the difference between anxiety and excitement? This means you have more control over your anxiety than you may have ever realized before! If you’re beginning to feel anxious about something, I encourage you to get curious. Why feel curious? Because it lets us start the process of shifting our emotional state. And, if we are curious about our state, it’s hard to stay IN that state. What is the anxiety pointing to? Is it a sign that you’re about to take a big leap? Is it a sign that you’re experiencing an old trigger from childhood? Or, something completely different? Instead of continuing with worrying or anxious thoughts, ask yourself: “What about this could be exciting?” And “What if this situation does work out for the best? What happens if I DO succeed? #anxiety #signpost #emotionsaretools #lifecoaching #thetaylorway
